National Lutheran Communities & Services:
One mission, many locations.
A tradition of retirement security, community spirit and
preparing for the future.
What once started as a small cottage for seniors in Washington, D.C. is now a family of retirement communities and services located in Maryland and Virginia. As seniors’ needs have changed, National Lutheran Communities & Services (NLCS) is adapting to better meet those needs. Our heritage is rooted in the Lutheran expression of faith, but welcomes people of all beliefs and backgrounds.
The first National Lutheran Home welcomed residents in 1895 and underwent several expansions. In 1980 it relocated to Rockville, Md., and built a 300-bed skilled nursing facility on 30 acres. Services were enhanced to include independent living cottages, respite, hospice, and rehabilitation, and the community became The Village at Rockville, Md. In 2008 the organization created a new corporate parent, known today as National Lutheran Communities & Services.
NLCS continues to answer the call to meet the needs of seniors in its region. Today, the National Lutheran family also includes The Legacy at North Augusta in Staunton, Va., The Village at Orchard Ridge, currently under construction in Winchester, Va., and coming soon, The Village at Crystal Spring in Annapolis, Md.
The guidance of the leadership and Board have set NLCS on a transformational journey—one of deep caring, proactive thinking and exciting possibilities.
