Assisted Living Comes to Rockville

ROCKVILLE, MD – The Village at Rockville—A National Lutheran Community (TVAR) in Rockville, Md., formerly known as the National Lutheran Home, unveiled 18 private assisted living apartments on Tuesday, March 26, in an opening celebration.

Guests gathered to herald the long-awaited addition of assisted living to TVAR’s campus with celebratory toasts, remarks and a ribbon cutting. Tours of the new wing were offered throughout the evening to showcase the various floor plans and layouts, along with available services and amenities.

Over the past year, TVAR has had a lot of firsts. From the very first completed, renovated wing in February 2012 to new dining venues in October 2012, this added service of assisted living represents the first time it has ever been offered on TVAR’s campus.

General contractor Howard Shockey & Sons, Inc. is overseeing the transformations to improve the 32-year-old building’s aesthetics and functionality.

“Shockey is proud to partner with The Village at Rockville,” says Jeff Boehm, Vice President with Howard Shockey & Sons. “The opening of their Assisted Living unit represents just the start of many planned upgrades for this landmark senior living community – it marks the beginning of a multi-year phased transformation of the entire facility. They   should be commended for their ongoing commitment to excellence and innovation in the senior housing field.”

TVAR’s current location was built in 1980, after the move from its long-time Washington, D.C. location at 18th and Douglas Streets, N.E., where the original National Lutheran Home was located.

“TVAR started as a 300-bed skilled nursing facility with 144 independent living cottages and has been reconfiguring that mix to better meet the needs of today’s and tomorrow’s seniors,” Executive Director Jana Broughton said.

Once renovations are completed, the main building will feature all private rooms, including: 94 extended nursing care rooms, 66 short-term rehabilitation suites and a total of 50 assisted living suites (18 of which will be solely dedicated to memory support). New common spaces and dining venues will also be added, in addition to a second entrance on the main building.
