Staunton, Va. – Every year residents, staff and family members from The Legacy at North Augusta—A National Lutheran Community, known as “The Legacy Legs,” participate in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. This year, the group of 13 walkers decided to host a Pie-in-the-Face Raffle as a creative way to fundraise for the Alzheimer’s Association.
Staff members were enlisted and jars were set up in the atrium lobby with each director’s photo on it. For one week residents were able to cast votes for their favorite director by putting donations in the jar. As a result, they raised $888 for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s held in Gypsy Hill Park on Saturday, Sept. 7.
The three highest bids were for Facilities Director Rick Stonier, Nursing Director Debbie Fitzgerald and Life Enrichment Director Melisa Shuler. Each humbly lined up to receive pumpkin, lemon and chocolate chip pies in the face in front of 60 onlookers.
“I never realized I would still smell like pie, even after showering!” Life Enrichment Director Melisa Shuler said. “I agreed to take a pie in the face to give the residents a good time, and because it was for a good cause.”
For resident Jane Shaffer, throwing a pie at Fitzgerald brought back great memories.
“It was the most fun I’ve had since I threw my 16-year-old son’s birthday cake in his face!” said Shaffer.
This is TLNA’s fourth year in fundraising for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. To date, they have raised more than $3,000.
“I think this was a fun and creative way to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s and simultaneously raise funds for the 2013 Walk to End Alzheimer’s,” Executive Director Cherie Sims said. “We enjoy the opportunity to give back and every year this is one way we are able to do that.”
