Former Summer Intern Shares His Experience

November 10, 2016

Sylas Buller, a Calling and Purpose in Society (CAPS) Fellow from Valparaiso University, spent his 2016 summer with National Lutheran Communities & Services (NLCS).  Specifically, he served at our Rockville-based retirement community, The Village at Rockville—A National Lutheran Community.  During his nine-week stint, Sylas learned about health care in senior living and what it truly means to be a leader.

The Institute for Leadership and Service at Valparaiso University established the CAPS Fellows Program to help students develop their sense of place in society through intensive experiential learning opportunities in real-world organizations, accompanied by significant reflection. In addition to their internships, Fellows participate in reflective discussions via Google Hangout, post on the CAPS Fellows Blog, and write a final reflective essay on their experience.

Sylas, originally from Goshen, Indiana, is a biology and chemistry major, planning on attending medical school upon graduation. His time was spent working on several long-term projects including aiding in the development of an onsite clinic, and developing improved means of communication and documentation in the medical records system.

For the last three summers NLCS has been privileged to be a host site for Valparaiso’s CAPS program.  Programs like these allow NLCS to invest in the next generation of potential senior living workers. Sylas recently shared with Valparaiso University what his experience was like. Check out the video here
